HMRC SCAM Alert October 2017
An Essex Police Liaison Officer received an email from a concerned member of the public in relation to a phone call received which relates to the following:-
An officer claiming to be from HM Revenue & Customs states that a there had been a serious law suit made against the recipient of the call. They are then told to call a number immediately as this is the last chance or face serious legal consequences. (The telephone number given turned out to be unobtainable when called back).
HMRC have warned of the above scam. The HMRC will never ask you to disclose personal or financial information over the phone.
The lady who had received this call found the call very unnerving and has asked that I inform others as she would not want anyone else to fall for this type of scam. Ironically, the same Essex Police Liaison Officer who sent the email to me also received the same call to her personal home address and had the same type of call, it was an automated message of a very well-spoken female and even she was concerned by the content, as it sounded very official. Her call ended with the words, have a nice day – which did sound right after the threatening manner of the call.
Essex Police advice is that if you receive such a call of this manner that you end the call immediately by hanging up. You can report it directly to Action Fraud via their website http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or on 0300 123 2040.
If you have elderly friends or relatives who may be vulnerable to this scam, please talk to them and make them aware.
